Punjab Police Academy Hospital

HISTORY : Punjab Police Academy Hospital Phillaur came  in  existence when the Police Training School was established in 1890 by the Britisher in the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort.
LOCATION : Hospital is located on the outer skirts of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort, adjoining Golf club and lush green outdoor grounds of the Academy. It is approximately 200 meters from National Highway Number 1 from Amritsar to Delhi and on the northern Banks of Satluj River.

Hospital in the Present Form: This Hospital was upgraded to 25 Bedded Hospital in 1994.The Hospital is established in the old British time building with high ceiling and verandahs all around. OPD complex, stores, laboratory complex are scatted apart from the main building of the Hospital, in which wards, emergency, operation theatre and labour room etc are situated..

Infrastructure of the Hospital: Punjab Police Academy Hospital Phillaur is well equipped having the followings facilities:-

Besides this Police Hospital is equipped with medical facilities like ECG Machine, Nebulizer and oxygen etc.

Man Power : There is one Post of Senior Medical officer, and one Medical officer, 3 Pharmacists, 4 Staff Nurses, Radiographer, Laboratory Technician, 2 ward boys, and one chowkidar. Besides this certain police personnel are imparted medical training to assist to the Para Medical Staff for prompt and efficient services in the X-Ray, Pathological laboratory, emergency, operation-theatre, wards and OPD etc. are attached with hospital for this purpose.

 Routine Functioning of the Hospital :

  1. Punjab Police Academy Hospital, Phillaur is working in two shifts. The Morning  at 8.00 AM till 12.30 PM and afternoon  from 4-5.30 PM (with half an hour seasonal variations).

  2. Emergency cases of all types are  attended promptly  round the clock.

  3. Staff of the Academy and their dependent family members are examined in routine.

  4. The cases are referred as per the authorization of the Punjab Health Deptt. to the local Civil Hospital Phillaur, Jalandhar or Civil Hospital Ludhiana and even advanced Medical Institute like Dayanand Medical College Ludhiana, Christian Medical College Ludhiana or Post graduate Institute of Medical Science Chandigarh, depending upon the seriousness of the case. For this effective referral system facilities of hospital ambulance and services of Para Medical Staff are sought.

  5. Indoor Patients are attended by Medical officers minimum twice a day.

Specific Services at Punjab Police Academy, Hospital
Working schedule of the hospital is further specified for the upliftment of the health and convenience of the medical service's consumers like-

  1. All National Health Programs are being carried out efficiently with up to date instructions and special emphasis upon AIDS, population control, Heath and Family welfare measures etc.

  2. Prevention of Diseases is the main target and it is achieved by -
    (a)  Regular sanitary rounds of the Punjab Police Academy campus.
    (b)  Instructional Training and programs pertaining to specific communicable and non communicable diseases like AIDS, Hepatitis, Heart Diseases, Diabetes, Cancer,  High Blood Pressure, Obesity, Good food Habits and Balanced Diet, Enteric fever, Malaria control Program, Gastro Enteritis etc.
    (c)  Preventive immunization camps are regularly held for polio, Hepatitis, enteric fever, Cholera and Tetanus etc. along with routine National immunization programs.

  3. OPD Services are further specified in to Sterility Clinic, Family Planning Day, Antenatal day for pregnant women, post-natal day, well baby clinic   and general guide lines for non communicable Diseases and Communicable Diseases.

  4. First Aid Training is imparted to Punjab Police personnel for broader spectrum of their duties and humanitarian care to sufferers in the society. Presently the Punjab Police First Aid team is holding third  position in the First Aid Championship Competition at National level along with individual Medals.

  5. Yoga team was also being trained at Punjab Police Academy Hospital Phillaur and Punjab Police Personnel have been this team is out performing  in the yoga competitions at State and National levels besides yoga schedules to Police Trainees.

  6. Medical Health Screening is a regular feature being adopted at Punjab Police Academy Hospital Phillaur . All the Police Trainees under going different Police Training Courses and Program at this Academy, cooks, staff of the Academy and students of Maharaja Ranjit Singh  Police Public School, Phillaur  are periodically examined at this Hospital to screen out evident or under lying Communicable or non-Communicable diseases along with Health deviations. It is also done to promote positive health.

Data  of Health Services :- At an average 20000-25000 (Twenty to Twenty-Five Thousand) patients are attending this Hospital in outdoor patient Department and nearly 3000 patients Admitted in the wards of this Hospital every year. The patients are of all age groups, male, female and children.
Monthly report regarding total number of Outdoor, Indoors, Male, female, and children, new, old cases and number  of operations, number of delivery  cases, number  of Family planning procedures, X rays done, Pathological investigation conducted and incidence of different diseases etc, are being sent every month and annually to the concerned authority of this Academy and Punjab State Health Department.

Additional duties being performed by the Hospital Staff :-

  1. Instructional and practical training in the subject of Forensic Sciences  is being imparted to the Police trainees at Punjab Police Academy Phillaur by the Medical officers.

  2. Regular in-service training to para medical Staff and police personnel attached with Hospital to improve their efficiency and to keep their knowledge up to date.

  3. Practical Demonstration and lectures to the students of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Public School, Phillaur in the First Aid, Health awareness , personality development and Drug abuse etc.

  4. Participation and training of Punjab Police personnel in the cultural events to boost confidence to improve their personality and to focus the grey areas of society.

  5. Performing added duties during Passing Out Parades, Sports meets, different Courses and other activities of the Punjab Police Academy Phillaur.

  6. Delivering Lectures, conducting Seminars and Penal discussions during different courses being conducted at this Academy.

  7. Conduct of free Medical camp at the nearby village, to improve Police-Public relationships.

  8. Conducting  blood Donation Camps in Co-ordination with civil Agencies to improve Police Public relationship and to help the needy. Police Personnel donate blood voluntarily  (in 98-99 with State bank of India, Phillaur, and blood Donors Society Nawanshahar in May 2001)
